A late 19th century view of George Square, the principal civic square in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Named after King George III and initially laid out in 1781, it wasn't developed for another twenty years. The square memorial column to Walter Scott is surrounded by architecturally important buildings including (right) the palatial Municipal Chambers, also known as the City Chambers, whose foundation stone was laid in 1883.
