pear rust - conference pear

In late summer, early autumn, on the upper leaf surfaces of this Conference pear are the bright orange spots of the fungal infection, Gynosporangium sabinae, commonly known as pear rust, or European pear rust. This disease of pears doesn't generally effect the fruit, neither does it spread to other pear trees, but the spores are carried by the wind to infect Junipers. In spring, as the disease develops on the stems of the junipers, the wind then carries the spores back to infect nearby pears, so completing the cycle.
