This illustration dates to 1897. It shows the Greek Trojan War hero Odysseus being tempted by the Sirens. It is based on the design on an ancient Greek vase in the British Museum. When Odysseus passed the Sirens, he had himself bound to the mast and his men's ears blocked to avoid being tempted by their alluring songs and calls.
