Genetic research. Gene expression test being carried out on transgenic rice. This is a histochemical test, using staining to show the expression of the GUS gene for wound repair. Transgenic plants are ones that have been genetically modified by adding genes from different species. Adding the GUS gene can make plants more hardy and resistant to damage. Photographed at the French agricultural research institute, CIRAD, in Montpellier, France.
