Big Southern Butte, Middle Butte and East Butte are three large buttes which can be seen rising above the eastern Snake River Plain while driving between Arco and Idaho Falls on Highway 20. East Butte has been dated at 600,000 years, whereas Big Southern Butte has been dated at 300,000 years
