Looking outwards (SE) from House 1 at Skara Brae Neolithic settlement, Orkney, Scotland, UK, showing its entrance passage with jambs & bar-hole (lower R & L) used to secure the slab door. The stone bar projected into/was operated from a guard cell within the wall on the R. The doorway leads into the main passageway of the village (Passage A). Around 5,000 years ago, a cluster of 6 self-contained drystone-walled houses linked by subterranean passages was inserted into an existing midden so that the refuse material insulated the walls. A separate workshop (8) stood just to the W.
