Illustration of the anatomical structures of the limbic system of the brain, the complex network of nerve pathways which is involved with the expression of instinct & mood in the activities of various systems of the body. Anatomic regions of the brain that comprise the limbic system include the amygdaloid body (the lowermost of the two bulbous features in centre), the hippocampal formation (which obscures the yellow-coloured brainstem) and the hypothalamus (not visible here). Those activities governed by the limbic system include self- preservation, continuation of the species, expression of fear, rage & pleasure, and the formation of memory patterns.
