First unmanned hot-air balloon ascent, 1783.


The first public demonstration of a practical hot-air balloon is shown in the illustration. The balloon, invented in France by two brothers, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier (1740-1810) and Jacques-Etienne Montgolfier (1745-1799), is pictured after having been launched unmanned from Annonay, France in early June of 1783.
