A young monk studies Buddhist scriptures during a prayer session in Nala monastery in Nala, Nepal on 23rd March 2017. According to the Buddhist tradition in certain caste groups and places, first son is sent to monasteries to become a monk. These days, poverty has become one of the reason some parents send their children to monasteries as they don’t have to pay for food, living and education to the monastery. The senior monk at the Nala monastery said after April earthquake in 2015, the number of children going to the monasteries have increased tremendously. Besides education on Buddhism, these days’ monasteries provide secular education to prepare boys in every way so that they are better prepared if they wish not to become a monk later in their life.
