Braddock Heights, Maryland. 6-29-1980. Ku Klux Klan rally June 29, 1980 in Braddock Heights Maryland not far from the city of Frederick attended by about 100, including about a dozen robed Klansmen. Anthony La Ricci who led one faction in the state headed the Klansmen locally. About a dozen Klan members listened to speakers from around the country decry black people, communism and people of the Jewish faith and heard Òwhite powerÓ records played over the system. The town of Braddock Heights opposed the rally and residents posted Òno trespassingÓ signs on property all around the town. The field where the Klan rally was held was directly behind the town firehouse whose property was also marked with Òno trespassing.Ó Local NAACP leader Lord Nickens who tried to get Frederick Count to block the gathering led opposition to the rally. Two hundred people met in April in nearby Frederick to oppose the rally. One man stood up and said that he, Òsaw his father run into the woods to get away from the Klan and took a vow then never to run from the Klan,Ó according to Nickens. The night of the rally, sixteen area churches held prayer vigils and rang their bells from 4 pm until 10:30 when the Klan rally ended. Not everyone was happy with the low-key response. One of the few black residents in Braddock Heights said, ÒIf I had a rally for a black militant group in the neighborhood I would probably be run out, shot out or burnt at the stake. The state police wouldnÕt come to our house friendly like they did. Credit: Mark Reinstein
