Lung alveoli & bronchus. Coloured Scanning Elec- tron Micrograph (SEM) of lung tissue, showing alveoli, a bronchus, and a pulmonary blood vessel. A longitudinal section through a branching bronchus-air tube (blue) is seen. At lower right is a cross-sectioned pulmonary blood vessel (blue). Spongy lung tissue (green) surrounds these two structures; this is made up of alveoli air sacs whose interstital walls are lined with blood capillaries. Air passes from the bronchus into the alveoli. Oxygen from the breathed-in air is absorbed into the blood and distributed to the rest of the body to be used in respiration. Magnification: x54 at 6x7cm size.
