Kranhaus 1, one of 3 "crane buildings" beside the river Rhine, Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

MIPIM Award for Kranhaus 1 For the last century, the cityscape of Cologne has been characterized by the Rhine river, Cologne Cathedral, and the arc-shaped steel construction of the Hohenzollern Bridge. However, Cologne now has striking new landmarks: three angular "crane buildings" rising up in the former "Rhine Harbor" just a kilometer south of the cathedral. This ensemble, consisting of one residential building and two office buildings, has not yet been completed. At the northern end, one can observe the construction of the Pandion Vista apartment building, which is due for completion in 2010, whilst in the southernmost of the three buildings, Kranhaus Süd (Crane Building South), leasehold improvements are currently underway. The 15-story Crane Building 1 in the centre was completed at the end of 2008. It was awarded the 2009 MIPIM award in the business centre category at the International Property Market in Cannes. The fact that the expert audience voted for the Crane Building 1, which had been nominated by an international jury, was surely not only due to amazing shape of the building, which somehow recalls El Lissitzky's Wolkenbügel, "Cloud Irons". In 1924, the Russian painter and architect developed a vision of cantilevered office towers suspended in the clouds. Another important reason for the MIPIM award-win, was the extraordinary urban planning concept of siting the building in the former river port.
