The appointment was offered, inthe first instance, to Lord Hobart, and on his decliningit, to me. The terms were liberal. All my expenseswere to be paid, and I was to receive one thousandpounds for three months, reckoning from the day ofembarkation. But the pleasure of seeing a newcountry, and learning a new language, and the ex-perience of financial transactions I should gain in sucha mission, were to me stiU stronger inducements
