A BOILEB AND CONNECTIONS. I have an upright boiler, four feet in diameter, ten feet in height, and containing 118 2-inch flues. It is set in a pit deep enough so that six feet of the water in the boiler is below the return pipes and four feet of the water is above the returns. Two S^^-inch flows rise four feet above the boiler and run with but a slight fall to the end of the houses, which are 100 feet long. There are two 31^-inch return openings at the bottom of the boiler. • I shall connect the water tank with the boiler. The tank is thirty fee* above the top of the boiler. That will provide a pressure, I think, of about sixteen pounds. Will that be sufficient to cause the water to circulate satis- factorily? I have been using steam, but wish to change to water if I can get a good circulation under these con- ditions. I have only about 6,000 square feet ef-glass or its equivalent. Where should the pipe from the tank be connected—at the bottom or the top of the boiler! T. L. S.—Mo. While it would be preferable to use a horizontal boiler of the dimensions stated, good results may be obtained with the arrangement outlined. The expansion tank should be connected with the highest point in one of the flow pipes, and a branch pipe should lead to the other flow pipe. This would do away with the necessity for air valves in the flows; otherwise the connection could be made at any point. Since a serious explosion might result if the pipe to the tank happened to freeze, I would advise the use of a safety valve on the expansion pipe.
