USS Langley aircraft carrier (foreground) with aircraft (Vought VE-7) on its flight deck. In the background is the destroyer the USS Somers. The USS Langley was the US Navy's first aircraft carrier. This ship was originally the USS Jupiter (launched 1912), but was converted between 1920 and 1922 into an aircraft carrier. The ship was named after US aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. It was scuttled during the Second World War in 1942 following damage from enemy attack. Photographed in 1928, off San Diego, California, USA. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
