Bone scan. 63-year-old woman undergoing a bone densitometry scan of her spine. Bone densitometry is a method of measuring the concentration (density) of calcified material in bones. A dual energy X-ray (DEX) passes from below the examination table, up through the area being examined and is detected by the arm above the table. The results of the scan are displayed on a monitor (right). These results are compared with database information to determine the presence of osteoporosis, a bone wasting disease most common in women with lowered oestrogen levels after the menopause.
