Ruffled by themorning breeze, the water, into which we plunged,was deliciously cool and possessed of a certainbuoyant quality that made it no effort to keepafloat. This place andthe dock and the big roofed shed over against thenorth end of the water front were the accustomedlounging places of the colored folk of both sexesand all ages. It was a happy, careless, barefooted,coatless crowd among which we moved that morn-ing.
