Marine fossils, 18th-century artwork. An ammonite is at lower right. Ammonites were marine invertebrate molluscs with a spiral shell. They first appear in the fossil record around 400 million years ago and became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago. Artwork from 'The Natural History of Lancashire, Cheshire, and the Peak in Derbyshire' (1700) by English physician and naturalist Charles Leigh, elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1685.
