Poster criticising the Mafia for the murder of judge Giovanni Falcone and his wife, together with five bodyguards in May 1992

In May 1992, judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife and five bodyguards were blown up in an ambush on the motorway between Palermo and the airport. It marked a turning-point in the battle against the Mafia as Falcone was a Sicilian and there was widespread revulsion at the killings. Another anti-Mafia judge, Borsellino, was assassinated months later and these two combined outrages prompted many minor mafia members to turn themselves in and give information on the organisation to the authorities.
