Original WW1 era postcard of young recruits at an Officer training camp - they were Officer Training Corps (junior division) from Charterhouse School of the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment (The Queens) - which was based at Stoughton Barracks, in Guildford. On their cap badges the recruits have a version of the Queens badge with a Charterhouse banner instead of a Queens banner underneath the Paschal lamb symbol. On the RH tent is written corps 8 hut, the boys have a Charterhouse 19 sign at their feet. The older recruit holding the baton is perhaps a leader or mentor to the younger boys.
OTCs were formed in 1908 at Universities and Public Schools to attract young men into the army and carry out training sufficient to allow the recruit to be commissioned at a later date. There were 23 OTC contingents of the ‘Senior Division’ at Universities and 166 of the ‘Junior Division’ at schools. The OTCs continued their activities throughout the first world war and played a key role in providing the raw material for selection as officers. Source online: The long long Trail.
