LOCATING SNOW SHED FIRES BY TRANSIT.* Where the Southern Pacific railway curves the summitof the Sierras on the line from Sacramento, Cal., to Reno,Nev., there are 29 miles of timber snow sheds. In thedry summers of this region the greatest danger to thesesheds is fire and watchmen and fire fighting trains areprovided to guard against this danger. It soon developed that, with watchmen located only inor on the shed, exposing forest fires could and did obtainconsiderable headway before discovery, and the desir-ability of a station #from which a comprehensive viewof the sheds and the adjacent country could be obtained. As shownthe drawing tables and the estimators desks are arrangedin two rows side by side, so that co-operation is possiblewith least travel. Figure 1 shows the general arrange-ment and Fig. 2 shows a close view of an estimatorsdesk. Figure 3 gives plans of one of the drawing tables, which are made to order at a cost of about $30. Ordi-nary high stools are used with the drafting tables andthe necessary floor space is about 70 sq. ft. per table, allowing a distance of 24 in. between same and an aisle4 ft. wide. Probably of greater interest are the desks used by theestimators and designers of the Street Design drafting, except pencil work, is done by them. Priorto the installation of the new desks, they used the sameequipment as the draftsmen. From observation Mr.
