Illustration of the path of sound in the ear. The sound wave captured by the ear's auricle penetrates into the auditory canal, vibrates the tympanic membrane which in turn vibrates the ossicles (hammer, anvil, stirrup). The stirrup's vibrations cause movement in the oval window's membrane which produce hydraulic waves in the cochlea's perilymph, putting pressure on the endolymph within the cochlear duct, displacing the basilar membrane, pushing the stereocilia against the tectorial membrane and producing nervous impulses in the cochlear's nervous fibers. This nervous impulse progresses in the auditory nerve, then from neuron to neuron through the bone marrow until it reaches the auditory cortex in the brain which analyses the data.
