Green-crowned brilliant hummingbird. View of a green-crowned brilliant hummingbird (Heliodoxa jacula) perched on a twig. Hummingbirds are solit- ary, aggressive birds which inhabit the forests of Central and South America. They are the smallest birds, with some species less than 10 centimetres in length. Hummingbirds feed on insects and nectar. They can beat their wings extremely fast, and are famous for their ability to hover, and they can even fly backwards. To feed from flowers, they hover by them and reach the nectar with their long beaks. Their agile flight makes them superb at catching insects. Photographed in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Costa Rica.
