Floodgates, stop gates, Shigang (Shih-Kang) Dam, Shigang District, Taichung, Taiwan
Shigang (Shih-Kang) Dam located at Shigang District in Taichung, designed and constructed by Taiwanese engineers themselves, was completed on October 15th 1977. The water diverted from Tachia river through this weir became the most important source water for great Taichung area. Unfortunately, due to the 921 Earthquake in 1999, which destroyed the dam on the right wing side, a severe dam breach occurred immediately after the quake, then the water stored in reservoir directly flew into downstream resulted in severe water shortage in Taichung area for a certain time. Although a number of dam restoration projects were completed at the end of 2000, and temporarily relieved water supply problem, yet recovering the original storage function of the dam remained difficult. Now the broken part of the dam is left in situ and open to public in memory of the devastating 921 Earthquake.
