Dr. Samuel Wakefield {Thomas,* David,^ Robert,^ Robert^)son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Morton) Wakefield, was born in Huntington Fifth Generation. 229 county, Penn., March 6, 1799. When Samuel Wakefield was one year old,his father moved to Westmoreland county, and located three miles fromArmagh, a small Irish village. At a later date he moved farther v?est, and. made a home in the wilderness. Though then but seven years of age, Sam-uel assisted in the cultivation of seventy acres of land. In this no one was more successful than he. Without instruct-ors and without tutors, he conducted for himself a systematic course ofstudy, which he continued into the higher collegiate branches. In 1813,Dr. Wakefield, being then fourteen years of age, enlisted as a drummer boyin a company serving at Black Rock, near Erie, Penn., in the war thenbeing waged against Great Britain. When seventeen years old he left home to make his own way in theworld. His first effort was a subscription school, which he founded andsuccessfully taug
