Blast furnace train. Locomotives, crane, and buildings at Sheridan Furnaces, Sheridan Station, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, USA. The locomotive at centre is operated by the Lavino Furnace Company. This company purchased and owned several furnaces and mineral properties in the eastern USA. Dating from 1918, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
