The two lampsin the baggage compartment serve the purpose of afford-ing an extra lamp which can be inserted in place of anyof the interior car lamps in addition to giving themotorman light as needed. All calculations for normal operation are based onten relays, the two extra relays being provided to giveadded safety during voltage surges, or for use if someof the lamps are shorted out. With a maximumtrolley voltage of 680 across the total lamp resistanceof 100 ohms and the 70 ohms total regulator resistancethe current is 4 amp. The relays are adjusted for a10 per cent regulation. When the voltage drops to 612there are amp. flowing, at which time one relayoperates, cutting out of the circuit a resistance of 7 700 Volf5600VoltsSOOVolts4 Amp3Amp \ C~\ \ Vnlh ^ Amperes / 1 —7 =7 -1. SAMPLE SECTIONS OF GRAPHICAL VOLTAGE AND CURRENTRECORDS FROM ACTUAL RUN ohms and permitting the current to increase to Continued drop of the trolley voltage causes eachof the successive relays to cut out a resistor and bringthe current back to nearly the normal value. For risingvoltage the reverse operation takes place. The average working current is about 5 per centbelow the normal rating of 4 amp., insuring long lifeof the lamps. The relays are interlocked, being made to operate inproper sequence by an electrical lockout coil on each relay, which strengthens the magnetic pull. The re-sistor, cut in or out by each relay when it operates, iswired in series with the lockout coil of the relay nextto function, and both are short-circuited by the arma-ture of the relay. The relays are all set at the sameoperating value, but when the current decreases so that, say, No. 10 relay functions and cuts out its resistor,R10, the armature also short-circuits the lockout coil,L9, of the nex
