The United States' national emblem, the bald eagle, has so de- creased in numbers that its survival is seriously threatened in many areas. The Hall of North American Birds Is situated in the Museum's first building, which was opened in 1877. The original bird groups were prepared in the first decade of this century under the able direction of Dr. Frank M. Chapman, orni- thologist and educator. Eventually the exhibits deteriorated, and the hall had to be closed for renovation.
