The in-ternal between them and the head is occupied with theblack masses of the costume, which consists of a cloakand a tunic, buttoned up to the throat, where the gravityof effect is relieved by a delicate white ruff. The sub-jects dark-brown hair grows in a little point over theforehead. The face is of brownish hue, rather rugged,with brown eyes, deeply set and fringed with wrinkles;a long, somewhat aquiline nose; and a mustache andpointed beard, a little lighter than the hair of the No. 31 MADONNA AND CHILD WITHS. Madonna is seated, facing three-quar-ters to the left, with her arms tenderly encircling theChrist as He stands on her lap, offering an apple to theinfant S. John, who looks up lovingly while resting ahand on a lambs head. The Virgins yellow hair, smoothover the head and falling in ringlets upon the shoulder,is covered with a transparent veil that reaches down tothe almond-shaped brown eyes, which are looking out ofthe picture.
