The last surviving section of a 15th century hall house at 13 High Street, Lavenham, Suffolk, England, features pargetted - pressed into wet plaster - fleurs-de-lis motifs and geometric portcullis patterns below a carved load-bearing bressummer beam supporting a timber framed gable pierced by two oak-mullioned windows.
Lavenham, Suffolk, England, UK: fleurs-de-lis symbols and geometric portcullis motifs produced by the traditional pargeting technique - designs pressed into wet plaster - decorate the pink-painted facade of an ancient house at 13 High Street below a carved load-bearing bressummer beam supporting a timber framed gable pierced by a pair of oak mullioned windows. The property, now housing an antiques centre, was built as a cross wing of a 15th century hall house and is the only part of that original structure to survive intact. It stands in a range of timber framed and plastered buildings, 10-13 High Street, parts of which were rebuilt in the 16th century and were then transformed into the Black Lion Inn, which opened some time before 1768 and closed circa 1925. The entire range now enjoys Grade II* Listed building protection and is among more than 300 properties in the town judged to be of architectural and historic interest. The wool and cloth trade made Lavenham one of England's richest towns in the medieval and Tudor periods, with the size and grandeur of buildings such as the Gothic parish church and the Guildhall of Corpus Christi demonstrating its prosperity at that time. Most of the hall houses and other large properties were built for wealthy wool and cloth merchants.
