In theyears 1839-42 the govern-ment of Egypt sent threeexpeditions up the river,which got as far as Gon-dokoro. In 1858 the ex-plorer Speke reached theVictoria Nyanza (whichmeans Victoria Lake), andin 1862 discovered RiponFalls. Two years laterSir Samuel Baker discov-ered Albert Nyanza, andin 1868-71 Schweinfurthexplored the western trib-utaries of the White last, in 1875, Henry M. Stanley, one of the greatestof explorers, sailed all round Victoria Nyanza, and in1889 discovered Albert Edward Nyanza. Thus, as faras we know, the sources of the great river have beenfound one by one, and from their discovery dates thebeginning of civilization in the heart of Africa, and intime even its wild wastes may be covered with homes.
