Subject is, asusual, penetrated by effect—an effect which sets thescene and its chief characteristics before the eye intheir loveliest aspect, It is a typical English view, one which would deeply touch the heart of an English-man living in distant climes, recalling the fair fieldsof his native land as none other could. To such aone the harvest-field would be as rich in sentimentas it is in colour. Everything breathes memories ofthe old home ; the farm-house sheltered by the trees, thelane passing by it, the bits of common below wherethe sheep are feeding, the men at work, the stubble, the sheaves—he remembers them all. The beauty of the scene is apparent to all, andin this the artist at once asserts his power, but therare qualities of the picture as a work of art are tobe perceived only by observation and study of thepainting itself. With all its apparent finish, it ispainted with great breadth ; the sky is finely designed, the clouds are soft and luminous and lend a delightfulvariety of light and shade to the landscape ; the dis-tance is worked out with infinite gradations of tendertones, and the colonring throughout is as truthful asit is rich and harmonious. \51923
