DETAILS OF VAPOR REGULATOR. HEATING AND LIGHTING CARS 111 Steam leaves the train pipe at the strainer cross (), and passes through the admission valve into thehigh pressure chamber. After passing through the auto-matically operated valve A into the low pressure cham-ber it passes out of the Vapor Regulator again, andthrough the feed pipes into the radiating pipes at the. side of the truss pipe where it branches and flows toeach end of the car, returning again to the center whereit joins again in one pipe and flows through this pipeinto the outlet chamber of the vapor regulator and downthrough the tube and around the expansive diaphragmand out to the atmosphere. 112 RULES FOR MOVEMENT OF TRAINS As already explained, the heating of the diaphragmto about 200 degrees at the outlet causes the closing ofthe automatic valve A sufficiently to pass just enoughsteam into the radiating pipes to circulate entirelythrough them and maintain a temperature of 200 degreesat the outlet point, and it should be remembered that ifthe temperature around this outlet drops below 200 de-grees the diaphragm will contract instantly just enoughto open the automatic valve A^ to permit sufficientsteam to pass into the apparatus to raise the temperatureat the outlet to 200 degrees. Until the steam passes the automatic valve A
