A Howdah (elephant seat) in the Mehrangarth Fort Museum, Jodhpur, India. The seats were usually made of wood and covered in decorative work, often in gold or silver. They usually had two compartments, the front being larger than the rear. The front was usually occupied by the King, Maharajah or other important personage whilst the rear would house a bodyguard or servant. The elephant was guided by the mahout who sat astride the elephant's neck.
