Atom bomb casualty. Japanese man with flash burns to his skin caused by the atom bomb blast over Nagasaki, Japan, at the end of the Second World War (1939-1945). At the culmination of the war between Japan and the USA, the atom bomb exploded at 11:02am on 9 August 1945. At least 74,000 people died and 75,000 were injured. Another atom bomb had previously been detonated over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The USA had entered the Second World War in December 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. Following intense fighting in the Pacific, huge casualties were predicted for any invasion of Japan. However, these two atom bombs, the first and only time since that atomic weapons have been used, led to Japan's rapid and unconditional surrender.
