The 19th-century Empire-style Church and Bell-Tower of John The Apostle - Church and Bell-Tower of Apostle Ioanna Bogoslova in Kolomna, Russia

Initially, there was a wooden church near the gates of the Kolomna Kremlin in the 16th century. At the beginning of 17th century, the building burned down, and it was decided to build a new stone building on the site. Work began in 1733, but due to a fire in the city in 1739 they had to stop. Construction was completed in 1756 after which it was once more destroyed and in 1810-1828 the church was rebuilt. In the years 1826-1846 a new five-tiered bell tower was built in the Empire style, which reaches a height of 67 meters, which is still one of the tallest buildings in the city. After the reconstruction of 28 August 1848 the church was re-consecrated by Metropolitan Filaret of Moscow and Kolomna. Around the church there are various stores which were added in 1865 by architect IA Dagaeva. These shops belonged to the clergy and were leased to local businessmen and remains one of the main sources of the church treasury. In 1930 the service at the church was discontinued. In the 1960s the shopping arcade was rebuilt in order to maintain the original appearance and blend in with the surrounds. In 1996, the church resumed worship.
