The force detached was prob-ably exaggerated to Major-General Thomas, for on the 23rd the Federal army advanced1 to Ringgold, on the 24th drove in our outposts,and on the 25th skirmished at Mill Creek Gap and in Crows Valley,east of the Rocky Face Mountain. We were successful at bothplaces. At the latter, Claytons brigade after a sharp action of halfan hour, defeated double its number. At night it was reported thata U. S. brigade was occupying Dug Gap, from which it had drivenour troops. Granburys (Texas) brigade returning from Missis-sippi, had just arrived.
