After the Crimean war in 1856, Roumania was putunder protection of the great powers, established at theParis Congress, and Bessarabia was returned to 1858 the Paris Congress permitted the union ofMoldavia and Walachia, but required that they haveseparate rulers. Nevertheless, a year later, AlexanderJon Cuza was elected to rule over both countries. Withthe aid of France, this amalgamation eventually gained. Roumanian Residence in Bucharest
