For twenty-three years consecutivelyJ. W. Kentzel, who had been a promi-nent fireman in the Volunteer FireDepartment, held the position of fore-man of this company and it was only inJanuary 1900, on the reorganization ofthe Department, that his long tenure ofoffice came to an end. hi the early days. CAPT. T. B. KENTZEL Truck No. 4 had to go to every part ofthe city on a second alarm, and conse-quently has done duty at every impor-tant conflagration. The most notable ofrecent years werethe Brannan street fire,the Spear and Steuart street fire and IheBaldwin Hotel fire. In all the years ofits active and meritorious service it hasnever had a member of its company ser-iously injured. At the burning of theGrand Western Market on Bush andPolk streets. Truck No. 4 rescued awhole family comprising husband, wife SAN FRANCISCO FIREMEN 165 and four children from the flames. Thebuilding was reduced to ashes, nothingbut the bare chimney being left stand-ing. The captain of the company is T. who was born in San FranciscoApril 20, 1866, and joined the FireDepartment in 1886. He was naturallydrawn to Truck No. 4 as his brother wasforeman of that company, and prior toactually becoming a member of theDepartment he ran with Truck 4 as areliefman.
