In 1648 itwas the scene of a memorable siege. The Royalistsbravely held out for eleven weeks ; bat at last, all theprovisions of the place having been consumed, andthe soldiers and inhabitants being compelled to liveon horses, dogs, and other animals, the garrison wasobliged to surrender at discretion. Commercially thetown has been occupied in a variety of industries,among others the oyster fishery, which is nowcontrolled by the local Town Council.
