henry vii chapel westminster abbey moonlight Perpendicular Gothic style Sir Reginald Bray
The Henry VII Lady Chapel, now more often known just as the Henry VII Chapel, is a large Lady chapel at the far eastern end of Westminster Abbey built in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The Chapel was built in 1503 by the architect and statesman Sir Reginald Bray, one of Henry VII's closest advisors. Henry VII was buried in the Chapel on his death in 1509 in a tomb designed by the Florentine sculptor Pietro Torrigiano, although the chapel was originally intended for Henry VI. Alternative plans for the tomb were submitted by Guido Mazzoni, then working on a French royal tomb in Paris. The tomb is one of the first examples of Italian Renaissance style in Britain, and the chapel itself is one of the best examples of Perpendicular Period architecture. The chapel is also the mother church of the Order of the Bath, and the banners of members hang above the stalls. The Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, which is almost always referred to popularly and informally as Westminster Abbey, is a large, mainly Gothic church, in Westminster, London, just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English, later British and later still (and currently) Monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms. It briefly held the status of a cathedral from 1546–1556, and is currently a Royal Peculiar.
