Broken lower leg bone. Coloured X-ray of the left ankle of a patient, showing a fracture (lower right) of the fibula, the smaller of the two lower leg bones. The fracture is in the region of the malleolus, a projection at the end of the fibula near the ankle. The ankle is encased in a plaster cast to keep it immobile while the fracture heals. The tibia (upper left) and fibula articulate with the talus, the upper bone of the foot (lower centre) to form the ankle joint. Fractures such as this cause pain and severely limit joint movement.
