The most precious and inspiring heritage of any com-munity is the memory of the Hves of the good and greatmen and women who were born there. Ipswich is particu-larly fortunate in her inheritance. Some of her citizenswon high renown in the early days of the Colony asstatesmen and soldiers; some have attained eminence inthe learned professions or in mercantile life; many haveleft the impress of their strong, clean lives. Singularly enough three sons of Ipswich of the finesteminence are scarcely known today, save their namesand a few great deeds. Augustine Heard is rememberedgratefully as the founder of the Public Library. JosephGreen Cogswell is known only as the teacher of theRound Hill School. Daniel Treadwell, whose generousbequest has secured to the Library an ample endowment,is only a nameaugustineheardhi00wate
