Our friend has been taken fromus, but the benefits of his friendship willalways remain with us. Charles Herbert Hammond was born atWest Gouldsborough, Maine, October 24,1850; and his boyhood days were spentthere. At the age of twenty he shippedas a cabin boy and followed the sea forthree years. Finally landing in San Fran-cisco, he decided to make California hishome. He was variously employed until1877, when he became a lamplighter forthe San Francisco Gas Light Company. Inthose days the streets were lighted by flatflame burners in old-fashioned square lan-terns. Hammond liked this work, and lik-ing it he made a success of it, and so fa-miliarized himself with the location andproper care of the street lamps of the citythat upon the death of David P. Marshall,in 1894, Hammond succeeded him as Su-perintendent of La
