This photo shows the total eclipse of the moon at July 27th, 2018. The picture was taken near Stuttgart, Germany. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly the shadow of the earth. This is the case, if the Sun, the Earth and the Moon are in a direct line, so that the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. The only light reflected from the lunar surface has been refracted by Earth's atmosphere. This light appears reddish for the same reason that a sunset or sunrise does. Due to this reddish color, a totally eclipsed Moon is sometimes called a blood moon.
