The Ahvood Arms are a lion rampant between threeacorns; the crest is a cubit arm erect holding a bat-tle axe. The Ahvood name is apparently derived from LaWode of 1357, woodland at Coulsdon which waseither the 4 acres at Hooley House, (1208, ownedby Geoffrey Atwood before 1346) or the 15 acres ofWood Place, owned by Peter before of the same name seem to have written thename very differently (a Wood, At Wood, \\oode,Wode, deBois.* Attwood, Alte Woodd, del Wode, deWoode, A. Woode, de Bosco, f etc.) The name origi-nated in Coulsdon, a parish in County Surrey, Eng.,about 12 miles south of London, and adjoining Sander-stead and Croydon. The name is from their resi-dence at the wood. Surnames were then changed, according to the residence, or other estate had 15 acres of woodland and was oc-cupied by this family at least 150 years.
