The tongue is covered with numerous taste buds, and filiform, fungiform, vallate and foliate, lingual papillae. Chemicals that stimulate taste receptor cells are known as tastants. Once a tastant is dissolved in saliva, it can make contact with the plasma membrane of the gustatory hairs, which are the sites of taste transduction
