French Super Etendard Military Fighter Jet Aircraft
The Dassault Super Etendard ("Standard") was a further development of the base Etendard platform that performed well in service with the French Navy. The system saw deliveries start from the late 1970's onward and by the end of production, would see combat action in the Falklands War with Argentina and Britain. This single engine carrier-based fighter-bomber was a highly modified and updated base variant Etendard that included a greater payload, better capabilities and overall refinements and airframe improvements. The Super Etendard was also provided with the capabilities of being a nuclear-capable aircraft when armed with the Aerospatiale ASMP bomb. The Super Etendard came to be known for its accurate and powerful anti-shipping duties, particularly in the aforementioned Falklands War and later in the war between Iran and Iraq where Iraqi Etendards assaulted Iranian shipments in the gulf. Armed with the deadly French-made Exocet anti-ship missiles, the Super Etendard could utilize its capabilities to deal stealth-like blows to unsuspecting and unprotected convoys. As of this writing, the final Super Etendard series in French service is expected to take its leave later this year, though production of the system ended in the early 1980's.
