Volkswagen camper van on Margate sea-front.

The Volkswagen Type 2 camper van was introduced in 1950 and is the forerunner of modern people-carriers. It was particularly popular with the counterculture movement of the 1960s - '70s. Versions produced before 1967 had the distinctive split front windshield. A number of companies now specialise in VW Campers for holiday hire.
