TYPES OF CONTROL AND THEIR OPERATION. 153 tion corresponding to the two first mentioned for handle is returned to the central or off position by a. spring, so that the power is cut off whenever the motor-man releases the handle. There are five circuits leading from the master con- 154 ELECTRIC RAILWAYS. troller, and five corresponding train wires for the controlproper. There is also a sixth circuit in the train line, whichis used for an emergency cut-off, which will be describedlater. The five circuits comprise one for forward direc-tion, one for reverse, one each for series and parallel, andthe fifth for controlling the acceleration. When the master controller is moved to its first position(say forward), the forward direction wire is energized, which throws the reverser to its forward position, andwhen so thrown, energizes contactors in the main or trolleyleads to the motors. At the same time the series con-tactor is energized and the circuit through the motors iscompleted in series, with all resistance in circuit giving aslow speed forward. In this joosition no further action isproduced. When the master controller is moved to it
